NH man arrested in Va. for allegedly stealing late mother's car

A New Hampshire man wanted for stealing his mother's car was arrested in Virginia Monday night, police said.

Philip Nash's mother, Frances Nash, was found dead in Canterbury Monday afternoon, said police, after being reported missing last week. Her car was also reported missing, but it was found in Canterbury Monday morning. Police issued a warrant for Philip Nash's arrest in connection to his mother's stolen car.

"There are multiple stab wounds here, so it certainly could be classified as a brutal murder," said New Hampshire Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin.

Monday night, after receiving a BOLO from New Hampshire State Police, Virginia State Police spotted a vehicle matching the description on I-95 south in Prince George County, said police. The trooper pulled the car over and reported finding Nash inside, taking him into custody without incident.

"Right now we don’t know what connection there is what we know is that obviously this was his mother and he might have information pertinent to her disappearance and death and that’s something that is pertinent to the investigation," said Strelzin.

Nash is being held without bond, awaiting extradition to New Hampshire. He is expected to be arraigned in Virginia on a fugitive from justice charge.

The investigation into Frances Nash's death continues.

Any question in reference to information leading up to the initial BOL will have to be referred to New Hampshire State Police at (603)223-3856.
